If I could change language

I'd make it's the possessive and its the abbreviation. Or I'd make both it's and trust the reader to discern which I mean from context. Where it wasn't obvious the writer could just write "it is".

It's as possessive I can see, but its as abbreviation would be a blunder, I think.

Presumably, for consistency, you'd also introduce hi's her's. Otherwise you're just making the situation even more confusing.
